Instagram reels for cafés and restaurants: what works
The short answer
Four kinds of reels work best for cafés and restaurants: close-ups of food and drinks being made, the people behind the counter, behind-the-scenes and journey videos, and customers enjoying the space. Keep reels between 7 and 30 seconds, show the food in the first second, add captions, and post two or three times a week.
For a café or restaurant, Instagram is often the first place people decide whether to visit. A good reel makes someone hungry, curious or simply want to be in that space. From our work with Cascara Coffee in Delhi, across their Subhash Nagar café and the launch of their NSP Pitampura branch, four kinds of reels consistently did the work.
1. Food and drink close-ups
A coffee being poured, latte art forming, steam rising, a dessert being plated. Film close, in good light, and slow some moments down. Show the item in the very first second; that is what stops the scroll.
2. The people behind the counter
The barista, the chef, the owner. Faces make a café feel personal and welcoming. A ten second clip of a team member making their favourite drink, or the owner sharing why they started, builds a connection that food shots alone cannot.
3. Behind the scenes and journey videos
Opening up in the morning, a new menu being tested, a new branch being set up. For Cascara's NSP Pitampura launch we made ten journey videos that followed the new branch coming together. People like watching a place take shape, and they feel invested when it opens.
4. Customers enjoying the space
Friends at a table, someone working with a coffee, the room at its busiest. This answers the question every visitor has: what does it feel like to be there? Always ask customers' permission before featuring them.
Filming tips
- Light: film near windows in daytime, or use one soft light. Avoid harsh overhead tube light.
- Steady shots: use a tripod or gimbal for close-ups.
- Sound: real sounds, such as the coffee machine, sizzling and pouring, make food reels more appetising.
- Vertical: film in 9:16 for reels.
- Captions: add the item name and price or offer on screen.
How long should café reels be?
Between 7 and 30 seconds for most reels. Food close-ups can be very short; people and journey videos can run longer if the story holds.
A simple weekly plan
- Monday: a food or drink close-up
- Wednesday: a team member or behind-the-scenes reel
- Friday or Saturday: the space and customers, before the weekend rush
