Outdoor shoot problems and how to solve them
The short answer
Most outdoor shoot problems come from light, sound, people and weather. Shoot in the soft light of early morning or late afternoon, use clip-on microphones with wind covers, check permissions before you go, and plan for Delhi's heat, monsoon rain and winter haze with a backup day and a covered fallback location.
Outdoor locations give a video life that a studio cannot: real streets, real light, real energy. They also bring problems you cannot control. The difference between a smooth outdoor shoot and a lost day is usually planning. Here are the problems we see most often around Delhi NCR, and how to deal with them.
1. Harsh midday sun
Overhead sun creates hard shadows under eyes and makes people squint. Shoot in the first two hours after sunrise or the last two before sunset, when light is soft and warm. If you must shoot at midday, move into open shade, or use a large diffuser to soften the light on faces.
2. Changing light
Clouds and the moving sun change the look between takes, which shows when shots are cut together. Shoot scenes in order of the light, keep each scene short, and lock your camera's exposure and white balance instead of leaving them on auto.
3. Wind and traffic noise
Sound is the most common reason outdoor footage cannot be used. Use clip-on microphones with fur wind covers, place them close to the speaker's mouth, and record a few seconds of background sound at every location for the edit. Delhi traffic and horns are hard to avoid, so pick quieter lanes for dialogue and keep busy streets for visuals with music.
4. Crowds and onlookers
A camera draws a crowd quickly. Shoot early, keep the crew and equipment small, have one person manage the public politely, and know your shots before you arrive so you spend less time in one spot.
5. Permissions
Many places need permission to film, especially with a crew or for commercial use. Protected monuments, metro stations, malls and private markets usually need prior permission, and larger shoots in public spaces may need police permission. Ask early, because approvals can take days or weeks. Always get written consent from the owner when filming in a shop or private property.
6. Heat and dust
Delhi summers are hard on people and equipment. Schedule outdoor scenes early, keep cast and crew in shade between takes with plenty of water, keep cameras and batteries out of direct sun, and carry lens cloths and covers for dust.
7. Monsoon rain
From July to September, rain can arrive with little warning. Book a backup day, carry rain covers for equipment, and have a covered fallback location near your main one.
8. Winter haze
From November to January, smog and fog can flatten colours and reduce visibility, especially in the morning. Check air quality and visibility the day before, plan wide landscape shots for clearer days, and favour close-ups when the haze is heavy.
9. Power and batteries
There is rarely a plug outdoors. Carry at least double the batteries you expect to use, charge everything the night before, and bring a power bank for phones and small lights.
