How an ad film is made: the production process step by step
The short answer
An ad film goes through seven stages: brief, concept and script, pre-production planning, the shoot, the edit, review and changes, and final delivery. For a simple digital ad this usually takes two to four weeks. Most of the quality is decided in planning, before the camera rolls.
For first-time clients, video production can feel like a black box: you pay, people disappear, and a video appears. Knowing the stages helps you plan, give useful feedback at the right time, and avoid expensive late changes.
1. Brief (day 1 to 3)
You share your goal, audience, message, platforms, deadline and budget range. The production house asks questions and sends a quote. Your role: be clear about the goal and who approves the work.
2. Concept and script (about 3 to 7 days)
The team proposes one or more ideas, then writes a script or shot outline for the chosen one. For visual ads, this may include a mood board of reference images. Your role: approve the idea and script. Changes here are cheap; changes after the shoot are not.
3. Pre-production (about 3 to 10 days)
Everything needed for the shoot is planned and booked:
- Storyboard or shot list
- Location recce (a visit to check light, sound and space)
- Casting of actors or selection of real staff and customers
- Crew, equipment, props, costumes and permissions
- A call sheet with the schedule for shoot day
Your role: confirm locations, products and people, and approve any casting.
4. The shoot (1 to 3 days for most ads)
The director runs the set, the cinematographer handles camera and lighting, and the crew records picture and sound. Extra footage and platform versions are filmed while everything is set up. Your role: have one decision-maker on set or available by phone.
5. The edit (about 3 to 10 days)
The editor assembles a first cut, then adds music, colour grading, sound design, graphics and captions.
6. Review and changes
You receive the cut and send consolidated feedback. Most projects include two rounds of changes. Your role: gather everyone's comments into one list, with timestamps, instead of sending them one by one.
7. Delivery
Final files are delivered in every format you need: horizontal for YouTube or TV, vertical for reels and stories, square if needed, plus short cuts for ads.
How long does it all take?
- Simple reel or social video: about one week.
- Simple digital ad film: two to four weeks.
- Larger campaign or TV commercial: four to eight weeks or more.
Questions
What are the stages of ad film production?
Brief, concept and script, pre-production, the shoot, the edit, review and changes, and delivery.
How long does it take to make an ad film?
About two to four weeks for a simple digital ad. Larger campaigns and TV commercials can take four to eight weeks or more.
What is pre-production?
The planning stage before a shoot: storyboard or shot list, location recce, casting, crew and equipment booking, permissions and the shoot-day schedule.
How many rounds of changes are normal?
Two rounds of changes in the edit is common. Agreeing the script before the shoot keeps edit changes small.
